Before Amandus Smith, Sr.
co-founded the H and S Modern Baking Company with Edward Hartzel in 1918, he
operated a bakery at Tiffin and Pearl Streets in Sandusky. Pictured below is a photograph of the H and S
Modern Bakery on Hancock Street which was taken in 1920. Eventually
the H and S Modern Baking Company had facilities at 625 Hancock Street, 221
East Monroe Street, and 244 Columbus Avenue. The company also had facilities at
other locations in Sandusky through the years. The H and S Modern Baking
Company continued in business in Sandusky into the early 1950s.
Conrad Frank founded a bakery
business in Sandusky about 1882. After his death, Mrs. Conrad Frank continued
to operate the bakery for thirty-four years, until shortly before she passed
away in 1926.
Check out the loaf of bread from
the Armbruster Bakery, which was in business in Sandusky in the 1920s.
John Armbruster and Sons Bakery was
located at 1614 West Jefferson Street for most of the 1920s in Sandusky.
These are not the only bakeries
that have existed in Sandusky through the years, but unfortunately we do not
have photographs of every historic business in the area. Visit the Sandusky Library to find listings of
bakeries and many other businesses in the Sandusky City Directories, which date
back to 1855.

I believe that the Armbruster Bakery on W. Jefferson was later Fedderson's Bakery. It was across the street from Holy Angels' Catholic Church.
the bakery you are referring to is KNOERLE'S (red brick bldg.) ----- had the absolute BEST ITALIAN BREAD (sold in a paper sleeve --- not bad for an old german family) and had very good COFFEE CAKE too! ---- taking a wild guess i'd say they've been out of business at least 45-50 years.
My grandparent's owned Eddies Pies in Sandusky until my grandma's death in 1965. They baked and made cookies and pies, including small individual service pies. Favorites were the big sugar cookies, the fruit pies and chocolate and banana cream pies. They delivered to city local groceries including Schmidt's on Meigs St, one on Venice Rd and many others. As a five year old I can't remember all of the stores. My Grandpa, Eddie Rager sponsored several sports teams and events too. I have many of the recipes but the cookies make 22 dozen, so I don't get to use them.
My great grandparents Joseph and Sarah (Spencer) Triplett owned a bakery in the late 1800's and early 1900's. I have an awesome picture of the inside of it with them and my grandmother and aunt as teenagers working in the cafe/bakery. I wish I knew the name of it but no one is living that could tell me that. They were also from Huron, Ohio and surrounding areas around Sandusky.
No it was open in the early 70's..went to school at Holy Angel's and would stop and get a brownie after school.
I don't remember Fedderson's ever being there.
