Program Announcement: The Underground Railroad (Brown Bag Lunch Series)

Rescheduled for Thursday, February 18, at noon.
Bring your lunch and join us in the Library Program Room (Terrace Level) as we explore topics in local history. On Thursday, February 18, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. explore the Underground Railroad.

Join Museum Administrator Maggie Marconi as we examine the pivotal roles played by local residents in the Underground Railroad. This program is co-sponsored by the Sandusky Underground Railroad Education Center (SUREC). Registration is requested. After I posted this, I realized I should have explained the document. It is the record of judgment against Rush Sloane in a suit by a slave owner who alleged that Sloane improperly allowed the slave to go free. A transcript:

Receipt of judgment and costs in slave suits in U.S. Court of Ohio, July 8, 1856. (See Firelands Pioneer, New Series, Vol. V page 49).


Louis F. Weimer U. S. Dist. Court
vs. District of Ohio
Rush R. Sloane in debt.
October Term, 1854.
Judgment for the Plaintiff
for $3000 & costs.

Recd July 8th, 1856, of Rush R. Sloane
the above Defendant a receipt of Louis
F. Weimer, the above Plaintiff
bearing date Dec. 14th, 1854, for three thousand
dollars acknowledging full satisfaction
of the above judgment, except the costs-
Also receipt of L.F. Weimer, Sr. per
Joseph Doniphan Atty for eighty five dollars
the amount of Plaintiff's witness fees in
said case- Also certificates of Defend-
ant's witnesses in above case for one
hundred and sixty two dollars. Also
twenty dollars in money, the Attorney's docket
fees attached- which, with the Clerk and
Marshals fees heretofore paid is in full
of the costs in said case.
